The Baba Yaga Necklace

Handmade sterling silver and brass statement necklace. A hand-sawed, hand-textured hut sits in a hand-sawed oval frame, on a rich patinated background. A petite brass moon shines above the hut. A beautiful antiqued, matte finish complete this piece. Necklace measures approximately 1.375 x 2.125 inches and includes a sterling silver chain in your choice of length from 16 to 30 inches.

This necklace is inspired by the Slavic folk character Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga was believed to have been an ogress or crone (or three sister crones, depending on the folktale) that dwells deep in the forest. She lives in a hut atop chicken legs, with skulls mounted on stakes surrounding her hut. She flies around in a mortar and wields a pestle. Some believe she is neither good, nor evil, and can help or hinder one on their quest. Some believe she is evil, accompanying Death and devouring newly deceased souls. Some believe she is neutral, a wise mother-nature type figure that teaches action and consequence. Some liken her to a trickster, some to a shaman. In any case, Baba Yaga is independent and untamable, and teaches us that there is freedom to be had when one transcends the bounds of societal expectations.Â
